Training is supposed to come easy when you call yourself a trainer, but Ash was never very good at getting his pocket monsters to do what he wanted them to do, and fire lizard types are an especially ornery lot.
But if Ash ever wanted to achieve his goal of being a pocket monster champion he had to teach his captured critters how to battle, even if that meant getting a bit singed around the edges for the sake of training.
Ash had given up his gotta catch em all mentality, now he was focused on training monsters one-by-one, so each one would be able to evolve into their ultimate form.
