Scientists began experimenting with agar to observe how bacteria that had previously been raised on solid food grew. To make a transparent, semi-solid material, agar powder is mixed with sterilized water and nutrients in a petri dish. Microorganisms such as fungus and bacteria are added to the mixture, and scientists watch them grow in the gel under a microscope.
